  Call for Papers: Gender and Violence

2011 Women's Studies Conference,

sponsored by the Central Pennsylvania ConsortiumSaturday, March 26, 2011

Dickinson College, Carlisle PA

The Central Pennsylvania Consortium (CPC), comprised of Dickinson, Franklin and Marshall, and Gettysburg Colleges, sponsors an annual conference on women's studies. The theme of the 2011 conference, held at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, is "Gender and Violence."

The keynote speaker will be Andrea Smith, author of Conquest: Sexual Violence and Native American Genocide and co-founder of INCITE! Women of Color Against Violence.

The issue of violence is at the forefront of women's and gender studies scholarship, and scholars are interrogating how women's and men's lives are shaped by violence in many forms. We solicit papers on topics relevant to this theme and we especially welcome papers that focus on people and topics outside of the United States. Broad themes we hope to discuss at this conference include, but are not limited to:

  • institutional violence;
  • structural violence;
  • media depictions of violence;
  • sexual(ized) violence;
  • interpersonal violence;
  • the intersections of these forms of violence;
  • theoretical, practical, and enacted responses and solutions to combat violence.

Papers may focus on such topics as women's experiences with war as soldiers, supporters, detractors, and victims; current and longstanding fights over access to natural resources as gendered battles; institutional and/or structural violence across race, socioeconomic class, and sexual identity; agency and victimhood in the context of violence in popular culture; violence and sexual identities and practices; violence within domestic situations; experiences and approaches to ending violence; among other sites of inquiry and experience. We welcome proposals from across the disciplines and interdisciplines, including the humanities, social sciences, and sciences.  We particularly encourage undergraduate and graduate students to submit proposals.

Please submit a one-page (250 word) proposal to Stephanie Gilmore, chair of the Women's and Gender Studies department at Dickinson College, at gilmores@dickinson.edu or 105 Denny Hall, Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA 17013 no later than 1 December 2010.

If you have questions, please contact Stephanie Gilmore at gilmores@dickinson.edu or Kathy Missildine at kathy.missildine@fandm.edu

This week's discussion: Fucking While Feminist

 Permanent link

 Tomorrow night (9/21), at 7:30 p.m. at the Feminist Collective house, the FC will be holding a discussion entitled Fucking While Feminist, inspired by this really awesome interview: http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/blogs/sexist/2010/03/26/fucking-while-feminist-with-jaclyn-friedman/

While the above article is a tad heteronormative, our discussion will be much more inclusive, so please come and bring your friends--queer, straight, trans, female, male, intersex--we'd love to have a pluralistic, honest conversation. We'd like to talk about how a feminist identity affects the way you date and have sex. How has your dating/sex life changed since you started identifying as a feminist? What things are you more open to because of feminism? What things are red flags to you because of feminism? Have your primping/grooming/beauty habits changed? Do you ever find yourself making compromises? How do potential partners/hook-ups respond to your feminism? Etc, etc.

Hope to see you there, it should be a great discussion!

Subject: Workshop Proposals now being accepted for GSA Leadership Summit

Hello:

The GSA Leadership Summit planning committee is now accepting proposals for workshops to be presented at the 4th Annual GSA Leadership Summit on Friday, February 25, 2011, at Dickinson College. Please see the link below for proposals. Completed RFPs are due back to me at this email address, lmarven@centralpalgbtcenter.org, no later than November 1, 2010. Incomplete proposals will not be considered by the committee.

We especially encourage proposals that focus on topics including but not limited to: GSA technical assistance (including student leadership development, club fundraising strategies, creative ideas for programming, etc.), bisexuality/biphobia, Day of Silence planning, and racial and ethnic intersections with gender and sexuality. We are looking for a broad range of topics and formats for workshops, and a diverse group of presenters. We are especially interested in having a mix of student and professional presenters.

Please find more information on the link provided, and let me know if you have any questions. Please also pass this along to anyone who may be interested in submitting a proposal.

Thanks,
Louie

Nic and Jules (Annette Bening and Julianne Moore) are in a long-term, committed, loving but by no means perfect relation- ship. Nic, a physician, needs to wield control, whereas Jules is less self-assured. She has floundered in her “nine to five” life, sometimes trying to start a business - always unsuccessfully - or being the stay-at-home mom. They have two teen-aged children, Joni and Laser, who are also half-siblings, having the same unknown sperm donor father.

Shortly after Joni’s eighteenth birthday, before she plans to leave the house and head off to college, Laser pleads with her to try and contact their sperm donor father. He is Paul (Mark Ruffalo), a co-op farmer and restaurateur. Despite his seemingly successful businesses, Paul has always shirked responsibility, especially in his personal life. After Joni and Laser meet with Paul, Nic and Jules learn what their children have done, and although they don’t want Paul infiltrating their lives, they want to meet him, because Joni and Laser seem to want to maintain a link with him. As Paul’s relationship with the entire family grows, and as he hires Jules to design and construct his backyard, they have an effect on what he wants in life, and he in turn affects the family dynamic as well as each person’s relationships outside of the family.

The hit of the 2010 Sundance Festival, The Kids Are All Right has been praised by Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune: “”All right” doesn’t begin to describe it. The Kids Are All Right is wonderful. Here is a film that respects and enjoys all of its characters, the give-and-take and recklessness and wisdom of any functioning family unit, conventional or   un-."
