Through the AAUW Leadership Programs, there are many opportunities for you and students on your campus to receive funding and leadership opportunities this school year. The program and application information is below. My AAUW colleague Kate Farrar, director of Leadership Programs, and I look forward to meeting many of you during the NWSA conference in November!
Also, I have a book out this month on gender-based street harassment, Stop Street Harassment: Making Public Places Safe & Welcoming for Women (Praeger Publisher). I wanted to let you all know that I am looking for opportunities to visit college campuses to lead discussion about this important issue and what we can do to address it. 2010–11 Leadership Programs
Now Accepting Applications
Make a difference on your campus—apply for funding and leadership opportunities from AAUW. Each of the programs described below helps women and girls break through barriers to acquire the skills they need to succeed and lead in their academic, professional, and personal lives.
Elect Her—Campus Women Win
Elect Her—Campus Women Win, a collaboration between AAUW and Running Start, encourages and trains young women to run for student government on their campuses. Apply to be one of 10 new campuses to host a session in spring 2011. Applications are available today and must be submitted by September 15, 2010. Selections will be announced September 30, 2010.
Student Advisory Council (SAC)
Each year, AAUW selects 10 outstanding college student leaders from around the nation to be AAUW campus ambassadors and to advise AAUW on student issues. SAC members participate in monthly conference call discussions on leadership and campus issues, contribute to the AAUW blog, promote AAUW programs, and build ties to their local AAUW branch. SAC members visit AAUW in Washington, D.C., in the fall for a two-day retreat and orientation, and they fulfill leadership roles at the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders. Applications to serve on the SAC will be available Aug. 30, and must be submitted by October 1, 2010. The new SAC will be announced October 8, 2010. (Students of C/U partner members receive preference.)
Campus Action Projects (CAP)
AAUW’s research report Why So Few? Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, released in March 2010, garnered national media attention, including articles in the New York Times and Washington Post. To put our research into practice, teams of student leaders and campus faculty nationwide can apply for up to $5,000 in CAP grants to design and implement programs that address barriers highlighted by this report. Each team’s goal should be to help increase the number of girls and women who enter and stay in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields. Applications will be available Aug. 30, and must be submitted by October 22, 2010. Project awards will be announced December 3, 2010. (C/U partner members receive preference.)
