On Monday, April 16,
2012 in the Stern Center Great Room, internationally acclaimed poet Tino
Villanueva read a selection of his poetry and discussed the literary, cultural
and autobiographical aspects of his work. His presentation, entitled
"Tino Villanueva: Poetry Reading with Commentary," was delivered primarily in English.
Tino Villanueva is the author of several poetry collections, including
"Scene from the Movie Giant" (1993), which won the 1994 American Book
Award. He edited the seminal literary anthology on the Mexican American
literary tradition "Chicanos: Antología histórica y literaria" (1980)
and has published a number of articles on poetry. His work is featured in the
2011 edition of the Norton Anthology of Latino Literature.
Born in Texas to a family of migrant workers, Villanueva now teaches at Boston
University. His poems address a wide range of experiences, from backbreaking
migrant struggles and language politics to space, love, and the nature of
creativity.
