What is a Lavender Reception?

An inspiring and affirming ceremony that celebrates the achievements of graduating students in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and ally community from Dickinson College.

The ceremony includes time to thank significant supporters and a time to celebrate the achievements of each graduate. As part of the ceremony, graduates and alumni receive a rainbow symbol and recognition certificate.

Who participates in a Lavender Reception?

Traditionally, graduating students have been the only recognized individuals in Lavender Reception ceremonies. Since Dickinson has now established an institutionally sponsored Office of LGBTQ Services, the Office wishes to also recognize the LGBTQQIA alumni community from Dickinson. Acknowledging the challenges that alumni might have faced and a previous lack of resources, the new Office would like to welcome back alumni with graduating students and raise awareness of the new energy and exciting changes happening at Dickinson around LGBTQQIA issues.

Recognizing the challenging road to graduation that many students in the LGBTQQIA community face, the ceremony gives graduating students, family, friends, faculty, administrators, peers, allies, and significant supporters the opportunity to holistically embrace each student at the conclusion of their undergraduate journey.

Are there specific awards given during the ceremony?
