Math/CS Chat - Tuesday, February 28 @ Noon in Tome 115

Join us on Tuesday, February 28th at Noon in Tome 115 for our next Math/CS Chat.  Jim Wiseman, Agnes Scott College, will present "Computation and Chaos".  Free pizza & everyone welcome.

Abstract: A dynamical system is one that evolves over time according to fixed rules - for example, the motion of the planets, the populations of competing species of animals, or the formation of traffic jams.  Simple rules can often lead to chaotic behavior.  It's natural to try to use computers to understand these systems, but unfortunately even the tinest numerical error renders the results useless for pure mathematics, which demands exact answers, not approximations.  The problems are especially bad when we try to study the long-term behavior of chaotic dynamical systems, since small errors can quickly accumulate into big ones.  We'll look at these problems, and at ways in which we can overcome them to use numerical approximation to prove mathematically rigorous results.

Attention all Mathematics & Computer Science Majors!  Mark your calendars now for the Mathematics & Computer Science Majors Dinner to be held on Tuesday, April 17th at 6:00 p.m. in the Social Hall West.  Professor Jennifer Schaefer will be the evening speaker.  Majors must sign up in advance for this dinner in Tome 201 or by emailing millert@dickinson.edu closer to the event date.

Mark your calendars for the 27th Annual Science Research Symposium on Monday, April 23, 2012 in the Rector Science Complex Atrium from 4:30-6:00 p.m.  This event will feature student poster presentations.  If you are interested in presenting a poster, email ernstj@dickinson.edu by Monday, April 16th.  Please include the following information:

1. name of student presenting
2. full title of presentation
3. name of faculty mentor (if any)
4. short abstract of the research (250 words or less)

Benjamin J. Galluzzo, Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Shippensburg University, will present "Water, water everywhere, but is it safe to drink?" on Tuesday, February 7th at Noon in Tome 115.  Free pizza, everyone welcome!

Abstract: In Pennsylvania and throughout North America, clean potable water is in abundance, or is it?  Interestingly, answers to this question are formulated using remarkably accessible mathematics.  In this talk, we will introduce basic hydrogeologic principles and use algebraic manipulation - as well as a little calculus - to develop a working subsurface fluid flow model.  The talk will conclude with a brief discussion on the direction of current research in the discipline.
