  NATIONAL LIBRARY OF MEDICINE
History of Medicine Division Seminar
Tuesday, December 7, 2-3:30pm
NLM Visitor Center, Building 38A
Bethesda, MD

"Projecting Prevention: TB, Edgar Ulmer, and Racializing the Sponsored Health Film."

Devin Orgeron, PhD
Assistant Professor, North Carolina State University

This presentation establishes connections between three distinct and seemingly disparate realms: the aggressive campaign against tuberculosis in the United States; the development of motion pictures for educational purposes; and cinematic authorship both inside and outside of the American studio system.  At first glance, these three areas might seem unconnected. But the National Tuberculosis Association's (NTA) campaign against tuberculosis, which featured a series of short films directed by the legendary filmmaker Edgar Ulmer, allows an opportunity to consider the complex relationship between the film industry and the medical community's very specific communicational needs.

All are welcome.

Note:  The next History of Medicine Division seminar will be held on January 27, 2011, 2-3:30pm in the NLM Visitor Center, Building 38A.  Professor Ann Jannetta of the University of Pittsburgh will speak on "Japan's Vaccinators: Medicine as an Agent of Change in Nineteenth Century Japan."
