This presentation establishes connections between three distinct and seemingly disparate realms: the aggressive campaign against tuberculosis in the United States; the development of motion pictures for educational purposes; and cinematic authorship both inside and outside of the American studio system.  At first glance, these three areas might seem unconnected. But the National Tuberculosis Association's (NTA) campaign against tuberculosis, which featured a series of short films directed by the legendary filmmaker Edgar Ulmer, allows an opportunity to consider the complex relationship between the film industry and the medical community's very specific communicational needs.
