Join us on Saturday, December 5th, for a bus trip to Washington, D.C., and the Holocaust Museum.  Leave from ATS at 8:00 a.m., spend the morning and lunch on your own in D.C., then join up at 1:00 p.m. at the Holocaust Museum for the tour.  We will return to Dickinson by 6:30 p.m.  Deposit is $10 and returned on the bus.  Sign up in the Campus Life Office and complete trip forms.

Congregation Beth Tikvah, Reform-affiliated, meets at 7:15 p.m. for Friday night services.  With lay leaders conducting the services, members of the congregation rotate responsibilities for leading D'var Torah.  The services are informal and they welcome students and members of the community to join them.

Phyllis Chapell, guitar and Ken Ulansey, Horn

    Phyllis Chapell performs an unique mix of originals, folk, jazz and international music, including sings in up to 12 languages from Brazil, Latin America, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.  She has performed in concert throughout the East Coast, the Midwest, in Brazil, Latin America, Mexico, and in Europe--and has released many CDs as a solo and with her work jazz ensemble Siora.

    Ken Ulansey is considered one of the most joyous, virtuosic of horn players anywhere, with the ability to play in a multitude of styles, including classical, jazz, latin, folk, and popular music.  A Pennsylvania Council for the Arts winner and Pew Grant finalist, he plays alto and soprano sax and penniwhistle.

"American Jewish History"  -  Hasia Diner is the Paul and Sylvia Steinberg Professor of American Jewish History at New York University, with joint appointment in the department of history and the Skirball Department of Hebrew and Judaic Studies.  She is also director of the Goldstein Goren Center for American Jewish History.  She has built her scholarly career around the study of American Jewish history, American immigration and ethnic history, and the history of American women.  She has written about the ways in which American Jews in the early twentieth century reacted to the issue of race and the suffering of African Americans, and the process by which American Jews came to invest deep meaning in New York's Lower East Side.  Her most recent book addresses post-World War II American Jews, in the period up to 1962, and their intense engagement with the Holocaust.  She has also written about other immigrant groups and the contours of their migration and settlement, including a study of Irish immigrant women and of Irish, Italian, and east European Jewish foodways.

The kosher cooking class was held in the kitchen of the Milton B. Asbell Center for Jewish Life.  Located on the campus of Dickinson College, the center brings together students, faculty and community members to celebrate the Jewish culture and faith.

Students learn how to cook kosher cuisine.  Each year, a student-run cooking club prepares a kosher meal that all students are invited to enjoy.

Over 100 students attended this wonderful welcoming Bagel Brunch held on Sunday, August 30, 2009, on the lawn of the Asbell Center for Jewish Life.
