Ben's Back!!!

Ben Edwards is slowly returning from the land of sabbatical and it turns out he's been pretty busy.  Lately he's been splitting his time between studying tuya volcanoes in British Columbia and studying an active eruption at Tolbachik in Kamchatka.

Here, Ben's pointing out the passage zone of an old eruption in BC to alums Gwen Dunnington ('10) and Everett Lasher ('11) while they were on a summertime research trip.  Ben also has active research in Iceland and, this summer, will be taking 2 students with him to study the recent volcanic eruptions.

John Deni to give Seminar talk Tues, Feb 19.

The Departments of Earth Sciences & International Studies will co-host a seminar talk given by John Deni from Strategic Studies Institute, U.S. Army War College.  Mr. Deni's talk is entitled Operating a British Ship on American Algae?  Prospects for Greater Transatlantic Cooperation in Energy Security and will take place at 12:00 p.m. in HUB Social Hall East on Tuesday, February 19.

Jeff Niemitz to give Seminar Tues, Feb 12

The Departments of Earth Sciences & Environmental Studies will co-host a seminar talk given by Prof. Jeff Niemitz titled Mill Dams and Legacy Sediments: the 18th and 19th c. "gifts" that keep on giving.  Jeff's talk will take place at 12:00 p.m. in HUB Siderooms 205-206 on Tuesday, February 12.  Please note the room change from our normal space.

Alumni-funded faculty-student trip to Baffin Island planned for summer 2013

Marcus Key, Leslie Milliman (’14), Jeremiah Feldstein (’15), Melanie Campbell (’15), and Liz Plascencia (’16) are planning a trip to study the bedrock geology, glacial history, and narwhal ecology around Baffin Island.

NASA's Curiosity Rover Readying to Drill Rocks on Mars!

How exciting is this? Curiosity is getting ready to drill into a martian outcrop.  The next two weeks should yield some great insight into the origins and history of the red planet.
