Chuck Barone, Professor of Economics, received the Distinguished Teaching Award. Recognizing outstanding teaching, the award is the highest honor given to a Dickinson faculty member. Barone, who received the honor at a recent faculty meeting, was described by Neil Weissman, Provost and Dean at Dickinson College, as "heterodox, pluralist, radical, and above all impactful. More than any other contribution, our awardee’s legacy lies in challenging the complacency of mainstream thinking and of convictions rooted in shallow experience and privilege. His pioneering work in developing a “contending perspectives” model has served as a cornerstone of our economics curriculum and more". 

In an article written by Barbara Miller in The Patriot-News, the Carlisle borough received a favorable report card from its residents, according to a recent survey conducted by Professor William Bellinger and his economics senior seminar class, “Urban Policy in Carlisle, Pa.”

"Few problems and a high level of satisfaction” is the conclusion reached by the students, who surveyed 282 randomly selected residents.

The Economics Department would like to introduce Jonathan Cogliano, who will be joining us the Fall 2013 semester. He is finishing his Ph.D. in Economics at the New School for Social Research, and is thrilled to be joining the Department of Economics at Dickinson College. His primary areas of teaching expertise are political economy, macroeconomics, microeconomics, the history of economic thought, and using computer simulations to explore complex economic problems. His dissertation research focuses on applying modern ideas and tools, like computer simulations, to issues in the political economy of advanced capitalist economies. He also conducts research on the macroeconomics of climate change that explores potential avenues for avoiding a climate catastrophe. Prior to studying at the New School, he completed a B.A. in Economics with a minor in Mathematics at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Chandan Sapkota '09, an economics officer at the Asian Development Bank, Nepal Resident Mission, co-authors article "Employing India: Guaranteeing Jobs for the Rural Poor" in a new publication from Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.  For more information about this new publication, or to read the full article, please click here.

Dickinson Economics graduate Edward (Ned) Mulligan '04 has published an article titled "Why All Lawyers Should Make Time for Pro Bono Work" in the Indianapolis Litigation Blog.  As Ned states, "The bottom line is this: all lawyers should endeavor to give back to their community through pro bono work on the grounds that there are those in our community that are less fortunate.
