The Sphinx Winx

It is September in Egypt, and sultry Cleopatra's interest in Julius Caesar has waned. Suddenly, Marc Antony appears to investigate a loss of money due Rome. Cleopatra yearns for Antony, but her romantic ventures are mixed with Caesar's involvement in a tax scandal. Confusion reigns when Antony secretly falls for Crecia, the Queen's handmaiden—which is discovered by Lunia, Caesar's pampered daughter. Can the Soothsayer find a solution?

In May 1952, five Dickinson students wrote and produced a musical, The Sphinx Winx. Although it received rave reviews, it disappeared from the stage for 55 years, until Bob Keuch '53, one of the authors and manager of The Carlisle Regional Theatre, needed a fundraiser. Joined by Phil Capice '52 and Ken Hitchner '54, they began to adapt the show for the modern stage. Due to casting problems in Carlisle, the show never went on. Rather than retire the Sphinx again, the writers decided to go for broke and head to New York City.

Since March 2007, the musical has undergone a transformation—old songs have been cut and new ones added, playing time has been reduced, the dialog has been sharpened and the cast has been cut to 12 actors playing 22 roles. Now the show will go on, opening April 25th at 7:30 p.m. at the Kaufman Theater at Algonquin, 123 East 24th Street in New York City.

Tickets cost $18 and may be purchased through SmartTix. Information on the theater may be found at www.algonquinproductions.org/.
