Visiting Scholars
The study of literature lies at the heart of our language major. Every year a stream of top-notch contemporary writers pass through the language departments in Bosler Hall. Since 1984, Dickinson has hosted more than 100 scholars from 21 countries who come to the college to teach introductory courses and advanced seminars. Programs like the German department’s Kade Writer-in-Residence Program bring international authors to Carlisle, often for extended residencies, allowing students to cross cultural borders without leaving campus.
Recent visitors include:
- Homero Aridjis (Mexico, novelist and poet)
- Marie-Célie Agnant (Haiti, novelist and poet)
- Frank Beyer (Germany, filmmaker)
- Vanessa Droz (Puerto Rico, poet)
- Vera Pavlova (Russia, poet)
- Elisabeth Reichart (Austria, author)
- Antonio Soler (Spain, novelist)
- Leo Spitzer (Bolivia, historian)

Career Services
The Dickinson Career Center has advising services tailored for students who want to pursue careers in the global marketplace. Counselors provide guidance on course selection, internships, summer jobs, volunteer opportunities and activities that will help you explore international-career opportunities. Recent graduates have accepted positions at the American Chamber of Commerce and EuroDisney in France, and The Hague in the Netherlands, and are teaching English as a Second Language in Japan.
The Dickinson Works alumni-networking program gives students access to alumni pursuing international careers. The Career Center sets up workshops for students considering overseas employment and sponsors trips to major U.S. cities, where students may meet alumni working in specialized areas such as international education, translation services, government and finance.
Writing Center
Writing clearly and concisely is essential in any career. Dickinson’s Writing Center will work with you on the importance of a strong thesis, logical argument and solid evidence. Students build the understanding that good writing is not primarily a matter of correct grammar and usage, but of critical thinking, solid research and clarity of style. Each year several counselors are available to address the challenges of expressing yourself in a foreign language.

Global Education
Dickinson’s 13 study-abroad centers and various semester- and summer-long programs allow students to become global citizens. Our study centers are staffed by faculty members and advisers from Dickinson. Positioned outside of tourist cities, our centers give students the opportunity to truly learn about real life in a foreign country.
In addition to our study centers, Dickinson has partnership agreements with six other sites and offers a total of 40 programs in 24 countries on six continents. If we don’t have a program that meets your needs, we’ll help you find one. Dickinson students have studied at more than 30 sites beyond our own programs.
As part of the study-abroad program, we also help students interested in international careers and quality internships with companies abroad. Whether you choose to work at CNN’s news bureau in Beijing, China, or at the Picasso Institute in Málaga, Spain, we can help you find real-world experiences to complement your foreign-language studies.
