International Business & Management: The world at your fingertips

Since the international business & management program was established in 1997, the number of IB&M majors has quadrupled. IB&M is one of the 10 most popular majors at Dickinson. And in today’s increasingly global marketplace, it’s easy to understand why.

The international business & management (IB&M) major is designed for those students who want an education rooted in the tradition of the liberal arts but is, at the same time, revolutionary. It combines the study of economics, business and management with the study of foreign languages and cultures.

Prof. Michael Poulton works closely on a project with four IB&M majors at one of the computer stations in the Marc and Eva Stern Foundation Center for Global Education.

Students receive a strong combination of core classes including:

  • introductions to micro- and macroeconomics
  • fundamentals of business
  • financial accounting
  • organizational behavior
  • marketing.

IB&M also has the most demanding language requirement for a nonlanguage major at Dickinson—five semesters. Students round out their curriculum with a senior capstone course and field experience.

IB&M students can tailor their major to suit their specific needs:

  • By selecting one country/area of focus—South America, the Far East or a European country—students take separate courses about the culture and the politics, economics or history of a specific region.
  • Or, students may select a global affairs focus, taking courses about the culture and politics of the world as a whole.
  • Finally, students may combine the two options, allowing them to focus on a particular area of interest and to study the global marketplace.

Look for a list of the current IB&M classes in the online version of the Academic Bulletin.

Even without leaving campus, Dickinson students are in a global marketplace, as indicated by these flags outside one of the classroom buildings. This is just one of the many ways the campus shows its engagement with the world.

Real-world experience

The IB&M major was designed around the expectation that all of the students would spend a year abroad. Our 13 study-abroad centers across the globe make it easy to become immersed in another culture.

Whether studying in Carlisle or abroad, IB&M majors complement their coursework with business-related field experience. Students previously have interned for:

  • Bahlsen GmbH & Co., Bulgaria
  • Beijing Carlisle Waterproofing Co. Ltd., China
  • Istanbul Oto (Turkey)
  • Marriott International, Harrisburg, Pa.
  • MBNA, London
  • Merrill Lynch, France
  • MTV Networks, New York, N.Y.
  • Perez y Cueras Consultores, Spain
  • Plum TV, Martha’s Vineyard, Mass.
  • Salud y Genero, Mexico
If you study international business & management at Dickinson, you’ll enter the workforce with a distinctive degree—one that combines global awareness with concrete business skills, and one that is appealing to 21st-century employers. Recent majors have pursued careers in banking, marketing and business at everything from Fortune 500 corporations to small startup companies.
