Student Testimonials
Hear from current international students about their Dickinson experiences.
Maria Mei, China
I am a senior majoring in International Business and Management from Wuhan, China. My time here at Dickinson has been truly incredible. I have been enjoying all my classes, and all the professors here are extremely knowledgeable and also very accessible even outside of the classroom.
I have had the most incredible experiences here. In my sophomore year, I engaged in a year long course From Kyoto to Copenhagen, Negotiating the Future of the Planet. I learned about climate change from different aspects such as science, politics and business, and participated in the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen as a Dickinson delegate. It was also the first time that I took a course outside of my major and also my comfort zone, but it made me start appreciating liberal-arts education much more.
In the second semester of my junior year, I studied off-campus in New York City at Baruch College and was able to complete an internship at NBC Universal, which was the best experience I have ever had. The internship allowed me to get some hands-on work experience in marketing, a possible career choice for me, and living in New York City and working full-time helped me to make friends outside of school and feel like a grown-up. The whole experience enabled me to learn more about myself and become more mature. Now, as a senior, I am determined to move back to New York City after graduation and work in marketing or advertising.
Misha Garg, India
When applying to college in a foreign country, one doesn’t always get the chance to visit the college itself. I was no exception. I did extensive research on which college I wanted to attend and finally decided on Dickinson as it seemed to fit what I was looking for. But, I was surprised when Dickinson offered everything they promised and managed to surpass my expectations.
The aspects of Dickinson that attracted me the most were small classrooms, close professor-student relationship, study-abroad programs and research opportunities. This year, I am a senior majoring in economics and all my classes so far have been small in size (10-20 students) and I have built some really close relationships with my professors. Professors at Dickinson really care about each student and devote a lot of time towards them.
I also spent my junior year in Seoul, South Korea studying abroad. I had an incredible time studying abroad and was able to pick a completely new language and reach the intermediate level within a year. In addition, the application process and integration of my study-abroad courses into my Dickinson course work was very smooth, thanks to the effective global-education system at Dickinson. This year, I have undertaken independent research for potential honors in my major and have been working closely with a professor from the department. I am really grateful to Dickinson for presenting me with such extraordinary opportunities.
Avgi Chatzimpalioti, Greece
Being an international student from Greece, I have always wanted to pursue my higher education in the United States. During my senior year at high-school, I was motivated by my school counselors to find a small liberal-arts college with a friendly environment where I could feel welcomed and comfortable while being thousands of miles away from my family and friends. It didn’t take me long to decide upon Dickinson.
Dickinson fulfilled all my expectations and allowed me to have much greater experiences than I expected. The campus, although small, is very beautiful and harmonic, especially during spring and autumn, when it’s at its best. The classes are relatively small and that gives everyone a chance to actively participate and get involved in the discussions. The professors are always welcoming and willing to meet with each student individually. They also offer insight and extra guidance whenever there’s some difficulty encountered during the course.
What intrigued me the most was the high number of international students and the possibility to meet new people from distant parts of the world. The global-education office and its staff were very helpful in organizing events and coffee chats for all the international students every other month, thus, making the transition and adaptation to the new environment much easier. I guarantee that all the international students accepted here are very interesting and engaged people and making such new friends definitely makes college life an enjoyable experience.
Last but not least, Dickinson offers great opportunities through its various study-abroad programs at universities in 13 countries all around the world. Dickinson really stands up to its slogan of “going global” and that is why I recommend the college to every prospective student interested in pursuing global education.
