Community College: Howard Community College
Area of Study: International Studies
Involvements: Intramural Floor Hockey
Why did you decide to enroll at a community college and then to pursue a liberal-arts education? And why Dickinson?
I chose my path for largely financial reasons. Although I was not entirely excited to go to community college for two years, I am beyond satisfied with how things ultimately worked out. I think I got everything out of the college experience from both community college and Dickinson. I’m grateful that I had the opportunity to attend such a prestigious institution. I even got to study abroad in Morocco. I couldn’t have asked for more from Dickinson.
Is there a particular academic experience during your time at Dickinson that stands out as most meaningful/influential?
I interned last semester at the U.S. Army War College, which is close to campus. The internship itself was an incredible experience, but one of the best parts was gaining conversation partners through it. I met with a few wives of foreign officers that studied at the War College. Many of them spoke English very well, but wanted extra help outside of a formalized classroom setting. I had a blast chatting with women from Saudi Arabia and Jordan while practicing Arabic at the same time.
How did your participation in extracurricular opportunities help you become integrated into the social community at Dickinson? And how were those extracurricular involvements critical to your Dickinson experience?
My floor hockey career has just ended. Floor hockey was a great experience to bond with a team in a more casual atmosphere. Additionally, the Arabic language table that met once a week during lunch was always important to me. Eating lunch at that table was a way to get closer to professors and students from the Middle East, as well as discuss Arab culture. I enjoyed learning vocabulary at Arabic language table that was not taught in class.
How have you been influenced by the Dickinson network, and how do you plan to give back to the college as a member of the alumni community?
The diverse Dickinson network has impressed me greatly. Dickinson students have accomplished incredible things in multiple fields in the professional world. I hope to contribute and help future graduates figure out their career goals and help them where possible.
What are your plans for post-graduation?
After I graduate I will work in Istanbul for two months as a camp counselor. I am currently in the middle of the Peace Corps application process and hope to begin my Peace Corp tour in March of 2014. I plan to pursue a career in international development and foreign service.
