SPAN 380-01Don Quijote
Instructor: Wendell Smith
Course Description:
Taught in Spanish Conceived as the first of a two-part sequence of classes, this section of SPAN 380 will focus on close reading of Cervantes' masterpiece, El ingenioso caballero Don Quijote de la Mancha (1605, 1615). We will dedicate the semester to explicating the novel and understanding its context, paying particular attention to its subversion of expectations of literary genre. In Don Quijote Cervantes attempted to critique and surpass the conventions of almost every type of literary fiction of his day through the figure of a knight who has gone crazy from too much reading. Students will come to understand Don Quijote as a landmark work: perhaps the first metafictional novel and one that remains a touchstone for understanding both Hispanic culture and the development of modern fiction.
