FAQs: Majoring in Music

What if I know from the first semester that I wish to declare a music major?

  • Students can formally declare their major at any time, but no later than the spring of the student’s sophomore year. However, the sooner students inform a member of the music faculty of their intention, the sooner they receive advising regarding course selection and studio placement.

Is it possible to double-major in music and another subject?

  • Yes, it is both possible and frequently done.

Does an AP theory course taken in high school count toward the music major?

  • AP credit does not necessarily guarantee advanced placement in theory; a placement exam is given during Music Audition Night at the beginning of every academic year.
