From the ghostwriters working for Alexandre Dumas père to Hollywood studios, via Surrealists' Cadavre exquis, a significant tradition of collective writing has accompanied the progress of modern fiction. After the success of group authors like Wu Ming and Kai Zen, collective writing has played an important role in the development of the contemporary Italian novel. Scrittura Industriale Collecttiva (Collective Industrial Writing) builds on this tradition by elaborating a method (SIC method) for the collective writing of fictional texts in the digital age. The most important result of the SIC method is the Grande Romanzo Aperto, an open historical novel written by one hundred writers coordinated through the website of Scrittura Industriale Collettiva. From theoretical, aesthetic, and legal points of view, investigating the present situation of collective writing leads to the discussion of crucial issues for the development of the twenty-first century novel.
