French & Francophone Studies
While providing language and literature instruction to its majors, Dickinson’s French department has moved beyond traditional French programs in two ways: first, it has revamped its curriculum to focus more on the context of language and French intellectual and cultural life using film, multimedia strategies and other contemporary sources. Second, it explores not only literature produced in France, but the Francophone literature produced by French-speaking countries throughout the world: Africa, Canada and the Caribbean.

Italian Studies
In Italian studies, the language and culture of Italy are inseparably intertwined. All majors pursue a core of courses in language and literature, which establish written and oral fluency, then pursue their interests in one of three tracks (humanities, art history or social sciences) to develop competence in one major area of Italian culture.
