How the Invisible Sciences of Environmental Surveillance make the World Safe for Infrastructure (and us)
Roger Turner, Visiting Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies

“Industrialized societies take for granted functional technological systems like power grids, air travel, and water systems. Yet these systems are continually threatened by storms, floods, eruptions and other outbreaks of the natural world. This talk uses history and sociology to explore how unseen managers use environmental surveillance to make infrastructures reliable and safe. Although this scientific work is purposefully invisible, it is crucial to our daily lives--and profoundly threatened by government austerity measures and right-wing ideologies.”
