Student Advisory Committee

The English department's Student Advisory Committee (SAC) works with department faculty to plan classes, evaluate policies and run events. Below are some current members of the SAC. Feel free to email them if you have a good idea for the department, or to ask them questions about what the major is like.

Christina Socci, Class of 2013

"Though I've enjoyed all of my courses here at Dickinson, I knew from the moment I walked into English 220 that I would be an English major. Looking back on my three years working with classmates and faculty members in the English Department makes me realize how grateful I am to this network of supportive people who are passionate about so many things. They have helped me become a better critic and a better writer."

Chris Striker, Class of 2013

"I most value the depth and breadth of intellectual development our department affords aspiring intellectuals. As English scholars and critics, we synthesize and apply knowledge from a great many other disciplines in order to best understand what a given text does and why it does what it does. As a result, we not only are able to develop the essential skill of lengthy and pointed critical analysis almost exclusively, but we also gain a broad understanding of other disciplinary perspectives in the process, and a more integrated understanding of the world the texts we write about reflect."

Renate Roehl, Class of 2014

One of my favorite things about the major is seeing how knowledgeable and excited the faculty are about what they're teaching while maintaining an equally energetic dedication to their students. I've been consistently impressed with the amount of personal attention I've gotten and the small classes that allow professors to get to know their students and draw the best out of each of us. I've also been introduced to new areas of English that I've discovered I love, which is always a wonderful experience!

Colin Tripp, Class of 2014

“The English major provides me with a supportive space to explore my academic curiosity and enhance my learning. Additionally, skills that are integral to the major, such as reading, writing, and conversing, will serve me well in any future career path.”

James George, Class of 2015

"I particularly like the engaging discussion that occurs in an English classroom. The professors make each class interesting and collaborative. Also, I have found the major both challenging and rewarding. Developing your ideas and presenting them both orally and on paper is challenging and is always an unfinished process. I have a love of all forms of literature and the English major allows me to explore new ways of analyzing them. The major also introduces me to many new genres and authors I would have otherwise missed.”

Laura Hart, Class of 2015

“I really enjoy the English major because it is constantly surprising me with things I didn't know about works I thought I knew. In a world where so much of what you know is because other people discovered it or thought it first, an English class is a place to really explore what you yourself think, with the immediate opportunity to have your ideas challenged by an engaged group of your peers. I have always been fascinated by the English language and its ability to connect people regardless of the time, space, and cultural differences that would normally separate them; it's a pleasure to have classes entirely devoted to exploring that fascination.”

Mary Naydan, Class of 2015

“The English major provides me with the invaluable opportunity to work closely with talented and passionate professors who challenge me to expand my worldview and refine my written and oral communication skills. Moreover, the discussion-based classes create an intellectually-stimulating atmosphere that encourages the combination of creative thought and analytical inquiry in our study of literature. Most importantly, the English major allows me to delve deeply into the many timeless literary works that comprise our collective cultural history as members of the human race.”

Courtney Helt, Class of 2016

"As a first-year, I am continuously amazed at how welcoming the English faculty is. The individual attention I have received  in the major is, I think, a uniquely Dickinsonian experience. My ideas are always heard and treated with respect, and I am constantly being pushed to broaden my understanding and to make further connections. The critical thinking skills that the English major shapes in its students will be infinitely useful in whatever career I decide to pursue."
