Applying for NASA Climate Workshops


Applications to participate in the Changing Planet Faculty Study Group and the Climate Modeling and Data Tools Workshop are invited from teaching faculty in any discipline from any college or university. Faculty are welcome to apply to and attend both workshops in the same summer.

 This form is a common application for several workshop opportunities related to sustainability teaching at Dickinson College.  Please see the instructions at left for more information about what to include in your application to the
 NASA workshops.

 Application Process 
 
Download the common application for CSE workshops.  At the top of the form, please indicate which workshop you are interested in applying for at the top of the form.  If applying for both, please indicate your preference for first choice in your project narrative. 
 
The application asks for a "project narrative."  What kind of "project narrative" is needed?  
 
Applicants should list a potential "project" which their participation in a NASA Workshop will benefit from.   A "project" may be an idea to incorporate new modules into an existing class, the creation of a new course or linkage to new ideas and information, or simply a series of questions regarding the possibilities for teaching climate change in the liberal arts curriculum. 
 
Usually, the Project Title is the title of the course or courses faculty are most interested in incorporating new climate change knowledge into, and the Project Narrative is a description of his or her ideas, possibilities, or questions about how to do so.  The Project Summary is a 2-3 sentence summary of the Project Narrative. 
 
All workshop participants will work on developing modules for the incorporation of climate change teaching into a specific course, module, or curriculum, during the workshop.  Although a clear idea of how this incorporation will occur is not necessary to apply (and applications from those exploring climate change teaching for the first time are strongly encouraged), faculty participants should have the capacity and willingness to incorporate information and ideas from the workshop into their teaching upon return to their home institution.

Selection Criteria   

Participants in the 2010 study group and workshops came from 10 different colleges and universities and a dozen different disciplines – anthropology, business, Earth sciences, economics, English, geography, geology, history, physics, political science, psychology, and sociology.  Priority is given to creating a workshop team for both opportunities which represents a wide variety of academic disciplines and modes of inquiry.  Applications from community college faculty are strongly encouraged.  Applications from interdisciplinary or team-teaching faculty are strongly encouraged.   Applications are solicited from faculty teaching climate change for the first time.   

 


Fees and Expenses 

There is no fee for participation in the workshop or for workshop materials. Breakfast, lunch and one group dinner will be provided to participants at no cost. Participants are responsible for the costs of their own travel, lodging and other meals. 

Participants from Dickinson College, Harrisburg Area Community College, Northampton Community College, Montgomery Count Community College, and Montgomery College can apply to their home institution for financial support.
