Dickinson Sustainability Curriculum Open Hearings

Do you have ideas, questions or concerns about sustainability education at Dickinson? Come share them at one (or both) of two open hearings scheduled to discuss visions, learning goals, and frameworks for sustainability education at Dickinson College. The purpose of the hearings is to obtain input for a curriculum proposal to be submitted to APSC and the faculty. The sustainability initiative is a critical element of Dickinson's strategic plan with potentially far reaching implications for the curriculum. Please avail yourself of this opportunity to shape the initiative by attending these open hearings.

Both meetings will take place in the Stern Great Room and are scheduled for noon -- 1:15 pm on Tuesday, February 7 and same time on Wednesday, February 15

Please use the following RSVP Link to indicate if you will attend one or both of the meetings. RSVP's are requested as lunch is provided.

The conversations will be structured around the following questions:

  1. What students should we seek to engage in sustainability learning? All students? A majority of students? A subset of students with particular interests?
  2. What learning goals do we want students to attain?
  3. What types of learning activities (course work, co-curricular activities, service, leadership, research, independent projects) should students engage in to attain the learning goals?
  4. Should we offer a credential to students who engage deeply and broadly in sustainability learning? How might it be structured?
  5. How might your department connect with and contribute to sustainability learning?
  6. What hurdles or unanswered questions need to be addressed to move sustainability learning forward?

A position paper, drafted by the curriculum task force of the Center for Sustainability Education, presents one framework for integrating sustainability across the Dickinson curriculum and poses possible answers to some of the above questions. The main elements of the framework will be outlined at the hearings to provide a starting point for the conversations. But ideas for other approaches are most welcome.
