U.S. University Presidents
Summit on International Education

President William Durden participated in the first U.S. University Presidents Summit on International Education, held January 5-6, 2006, in Washington, DC. He joined leaders from schools such as Stanford University, Bates College, Duke University, MIT and Princeton University to discuss ways to strengthen international education.

The Summit focused on strategies to attract foreign students and scholars to the United States as well as ways to encourage more American students to receive part of their education abroad. President George W. Bush delivered remarks at the opening event, where he launched the National Security Language Initiative, a plan to encourage the development of foreign language skills. Other speakers included First Lady Laura Bush, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings.
