From being among the first colleges and universities in the country to offer domestic-partner benefits to hosting the annual Gay-Straight Alliance Leadership Summit for college and high-school students (the only one of its kind in Pennsylvania), Dickinson has a history of welcoming students, faculty and staff who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer.
Below are some groups and programs that reflect Dickinson's spectrum of interests:
The Office of LGBTQ Services seeks to foster community among LGBTQ Dickinsonians and their straight allies; welcomes a diversity of racial, ethnic, religious, political and cultural values; sponsors annual events such as the Annual Pride Reception, Coming Out Week and Senior Pride; collaborates with student organizations, campus departments and community organizations to provide the Dickinson community with access to resources, activities and support services. Learn more about events on campus or check out our Facebook page.
LGBTQ-FAS @ Dickinson is an informal group of faculty, staff and administrators interested in advancing equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) communities. In addition to hosting a monthly social gathering, LGBTQ @ Dickinson sponsors cultural events on and off campus, maintains an e-mail listserv. Assistant Professor of Italian James McMenamin is the group's coordinator. Learn more about some of the faculty, staff and administrators who support LGBTQ @ Dickinson.
Spectrum: Dickinson's Queer/Straight Student Alliance: This group is devoted to political activism, raising awareness and public education on gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender issues.
Gender Discussion Group: Co-facilitated by the Wellness Center, the Women's Center and the Office of LGBTQ Services, this is a semi-structured, coed, drop-in discussion group. The group facilitates dialogue about challenges, expectations and messages regarding gender roles that men and women face. In addition, this group is about increasing self-awareness, challenging stereotypes and sharing different perspectives regarding gender-related issues. All are welcome to share their experiences and ideas in a context of respectful dialogue.
