Honorary Degrees


On May 22, 2011, Dickinson College bestowed honorary degrees to three distinguished figures in American and international culture and education.

Allan E. Goodman, president and CEO of the Institute of International Education and Commencement speaker, accepted an honorary doctor of international education. Harriet Mayor Fulbright, president of the J. William & Harriet Fulbright Center, received an honorary doctorate of global education; and James DePreist, director of conducting and orchestral studies at The Julliard School, laureate music director of the Oregon Symphony and artistic advisor to the Pasadena Symphony, received an honorary doctor of arts.


James DePreist

James DePreist, a published poet and accomplished musician, is the director of conducting and orchestral studies at The Juilliard School, laureate music director of the Oregon Symphony and artistic advisor to the Pasadena Symphony. A former assistant conductor for the New York Philharmonic who was appointed by then-conductor Leonard Bernstein, DePreist has more than 50 recordings to his credit and has appeared as a guest conductor with every North-American orchestra. DePreist also served as permanent conductor of the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra and as music director of the Monte Carlo Philharmonic. He has authored two books of poetry.

Harriet Mayor Fulbright

As president of the J. William & Harriet Fulbright Center, Harriet Mayor Fulbright advances the work of her late husband, Sen. J. William Fulbright, and continues her own life's work. Serving as an unofficial ambassador for the 50th anniversary of the Fulbright Program, she traveled to five continents and throughout the United States to speak about the importance of international-education exchange and the pivotal role played by the Fulbright Program.

Allan E. Goodman

Allan E. Goodman is president and CEO of the Institute of International Education (IIE). The IEE administers the Fulbright Program and is the leading nonprofit, international-educational exchange and development-training organization in the United States. Prior to joining IIE, Goodman was executive dean of the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service and a professor at Georgetown University. Goodman also served as presidential-briefing coordinator for the director of central intelligence and as special assistant to the director of the National Foreign Assessment Center.
