Community Engagement and Educational Opportunities

It’s no accident that Dickinson College resides in the heart of downtown Carlisle, just blocks from the town square. The college’s founder, Benjamin Rush, had selected the spot so students could spend a day in the county courthouse and witness legal proceedings in action. Today, Dickinson College is actively engaged with the Carlisle community in a variety of ways.

History of Carlisle

Carlisle is a history buff’s dream. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Carlisle Historic District includes architecture from each century in American history and still retains much of the original 1741 town construction.

Visit Carlisle and you can walk in the footsteps of George Washington, who worshipped in a church just blocks from Dickinson. Or you can see the site of the Carlisle Indian School, where Olympic athlete Jim Thorpe once studied; visit the gravesite of Revolutionary War hero Molly Pitcher; or find the home of famed 20th-century poet Marianne Moore.
