The impact of inequality on health within and across countries

Richard Wilkinson presents the annual Morgan Lecture. The title is “Inequality: The Enemy Between Us?” “Since before the French Revolution, many people have believed that inequality is divisive and socially corrosive. Now that we have data allowing us to compare inequality within countries, we find that this intuition is more true than we thought. Countries like the USA, with relatively large income gaps between rich and poor, suffer much more from a wide range of social ills.” Professor Wilkinson has played a formative role in international research on the social determinants of health and on the societal effects of income inequality. He studied economic history at the London School of Economics before training in epidemiology. He is professor emeritus of social epidemiology at the University of Nottingham Medical School, honorary professor at University College London and a visiting professor at the University of York.
"Projecting Prevention: TB, Edgar Ulmer, and Racializing the Sponsored Health Film."

Devin Orgeron, PhD
Assistant Professor, North Carolina State University

This presentation establishes connections between three distinct and seemingly disparate realms: the aggressive campaign against tuberculosis in the United States; the development of motion pictures for educational purposes; and cinematic authorship both inside and outside of the American studio system. At first glance, these three areas might seem unconnected. But the National Tuberculosis Association's (NTA) campaign against tuberculosis, which featured a series of short films directed by the legendary filmmaker Edgar Ulmer, allows an opportunity to consider the complex relationship between the film industry and the medical community's very specific communicational needs.

All are welcome.

Note: The next History of Medicine Division seminar will be held on January 27, 2011, 2-3:30pm in the NLM Visitor Center, Building 38A. Professor Ann Jannetta of the University of Pittsburgh will speak on "Japan's Vaccinators: Medicine as an Agent of Change in Nineteenth Century Japan."

Background Information (provided by speaker)
In the last stages of preparing her book for publication, including securing the permissions to publish several reproductions of early AIDS prevention posters from San Francisco, Brier’s press informed her that she would not be able to include any images that displayed full-frontal male nudity. Told that the images were not central to her argument and that they would be distracting, Brier had no choice but to exchange the images for less-explicit ones, a decision that uncannily mirrored what happened when the San Francisco AIDS Foundation first created and tried to distribute the posters using federal funds in the late 1980s. In “Censoring Infectious Ideas” Brier will discuss how the response to AIDS has been affected by attempts to remove discussions of sex and sexuality from its center and question the extent to which we have become a more sexually liberated culture since the 1980s.

In it she argues that AIDS provides the perfect lens through which to see the complex social and political history of the 1980s and 1990s. She details how activists, service providers, philanthropists and the federal government responded to AIDS in the first two decades of the AIDS epidemic and places the history of a successful yet complex and contentious social movement organized to deal with the AIDS epidemic in conversation with a more traditional political history of how the state dealt with this public health crisis. Brier is currently the co-curator of an exhibition on Chicago’s LGBT history set to open at the Chicago History Museum in May 2011.
