The Jewish Week, New York - The Nearness of You

If I forget thee, O New York, may my right hand wither. For the great Hebrew poet, Yehuda Halevi, living in exile in 12th-century Spain, it was the holy city of Jerusalem that summed up all his earthly aspirations and became a touchstone of his art. Like Halevi, who famously wrote, “my heart is in the East, and I am in the depths of the West,” I yearn for an eastern city. But for me, that city is New York, just a couple of hundred miles away. For although my wife and I moved out of the city more than a dozen years ago to teach at a liberal arts college in the wilds of Pennsylvania, the Big Apple remains my spiritual home. I’d trade the Western Wall any day for the right field wall of Yankee Stadium. I’d take New York Harbor over the port of Jaffa in a heartbeat. Instead of any place in Israel, I’ll take Manhattan, and Staten Island too… I don’t get back to New York more than a few times a year. I keep in touch in other ways — e-mailing my parents in Great Neck, Skyping my analyst in Scarsdale, following my Manhattan friends on Facebook and doing phone interviews with New York playwrights for my Jewish Week column. But sometimes I need to get back in the flesh and, indeed, every return feels triumphant, as if somehow making it back to New York means making it in New York. I feel the kind of euphoria that I imagine a returning soldier feels at Christmas, finally home for the holidays. If I could, I’d end my family’s Passover seders with “Next year in New York,” rather than “Next year in Jerusalem.” Until my wife nixed the idea, I even thought of naming my daughters after boroughs of the city, although Staten Island didn’t really work as a girl’s name. (Neither did the Bronx, for that matter.) As the British writer Stephen Brook has pointed out in his 1984 book, “New York Days, New York Nights,” it is necessary to leave New York for periods of time in order to truly appreciate it. According to Brook, New York’s “exhilaration is also a kind of terror. New York needs to be paced, to be left and returned to, like a lover who asks too much.” In this view, the Big Apple comes into focus only when one has had the benefit of being away from it, of having had the experience of other places. And then, as Brook notes, “To return to New York is to repossess it. After a year abroad or a day in the country, you hungrily reclaim the city, and the city responds, recharging you, awaiting your deepest pleasure.” Like Brook, as soon as I see the New York skyline from the Jersey Turnpike, I begin to quiver in anticipation. My excitement at being back in the Jewish cultural and religious mecca of New York can only be compared to the extravagant physical and emotional response that Meg Ryan’s character has to the experience of being in Katz’s Deli in “Where Harry Met Sally.” Little wonder that one of the greatest scenes in all of cinema is the opening montage in Woody Allen’s “Manhattan,” with fireworks going off over the skyline to the majestic strains of George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.” This is not to say that the world outside New York is inauthentic. Life in a quiet, provincial state capital — we call it simply galut — is less expensive, less stressful, and much easier in terms of raising a family than life in New York. (For one thing, it’s a much easier to find a place to park.) But the richness of the Jewish life in New York simply doesn’t exist elsewhere, and my wife and I long ago gave up trying to reproduce the Upper West Side — or at least the more heimishe, less tony, more liberal and more intellectual Upper West Side where we met and fell in love in the 1990s — in a locale where Jewish values and commitments are very different, where most Jews are Republicans, and where almost all the communal energy goes into simply keeping the Jewish institutions afloat. Why did Halevi vow that his right hand would wither if he forgot Jerusalem? I think that he was saying that with the lack of Jerusalem in his consciousness, he would lose his very ability to create; he would lose the potency of his artistic vision. And, in practical terms, he would simply be unable to write. This is how I feel about New York; I feed off of its energy, especially its Jewish energy. I couldn’t do what I do without it. New York, for me, is the greatest city in Jewish history. New York, New York — in the words of Brooklyn’s Betty Comden and the Bronx’s Adolph Green — it’s a helluva town. Ted Merwin, who writes about theater for the paper, teaches at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa.

Commemorating Kristallnacht The Night of Broken Glass On November 9th, 1938, the Nazi Party demolished synagogues, homes, and Jewish-owned businesses throughout Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia. This incident marked the first instance in which the Nazi regime detained Jews on a massive scale simply on the basis of their ethnicity. “Kristallnacht” owes its name to the shards of shattered glass that lined the streets. On November 9th, 2012, Dickinson students, faculty, and staff, from all religious and cultural backgrounds created this mosaic out of pieces of broken glass to commemorate Kristallnacht. It is in the shape of a Hamsa, which is believed to provide protection. Sponsored by the Asbell Center for Jewish Life

Also on campus, I am an executive board member of WDCV (the college radio), where I have my own radio show, and I work for ALLARM (Alliance for Aquatic Resource Monitoring). In my spare time, I often hang out with Hercule Poriot and The Doctor.

Americans broadly support Israel: A recent Gallup poll showed Israel fifth in favorability ranking after Canada, Great Britain, Germany and Japan. This is usually explained by "common values," moral responsibility and the deep religious character of the United States. Americans also overwhelmingly view Israel as a reliable ally. Nonetheless, many in the opinion elites (business, foreign policy, academia) view the U.S.-Israel relationship as chiefly benefiting Israel: America gives Israel major financial and diplomatic assistance, but receives little in return. In fact, however, the U.S. derives much strategic benefit from its alliance with Israel. Intelligence, counterterrorism, military hardware, battlefield experience and homeland security are all areas where the U.S. has gained a great deal from the close relationship. Furthermore, Israeli defense actions (Osirik in 1981 and Syria in 2007) have been key contributors to American national security. We welcome you to hear more on this topic and meet president-elect Michael Kassen at this event.

Joshua Eisen, Taylor Kobran, Melanie Levine, David Lifschitz, Brad Meisel, Rachel Weber, and Jamie Klein were selected for the Birthright Trip to Israel that took place in January 2011. They met new Israeli friends who traveled with them providing a first hand look into Israel. They attended a meeting at the Hebrew University, visited the Jewish People's memorial to those murdered during the Shoah (Holocaust), Israel's national cemetery where the leaders of the nation buried their solders who sacrificed their life for the nation, attended a show by the "Nalag'at" Theater Company, rode camels, and walked the famous desert stronghold overlooking the Dead Sea complete with palaces of King Herod and the site of the last battle against the Romans during the First uprising. They had an absolutely wonderful and exciting experience, and recommend anyone who qualifies for this trip to register as soon as the next opportunity comes up!!

Urban Adamah, based in Berkeley, CA, is a three-month intensive residential leadership training for young adults ages 20-29, that integrates urban organic farming, social justice work and progressive Jewish living and learning. Twelve Urban Adamah Fellows are selected each season to operate an organic farm and educational center, intern with community organizations addressing issues at the intersection of poverty, food security and environmental stewardship, and learn an approach to Jewish tradition that opens the heart and builds joyful community. Applicants do not need any farming or Jewish knowledge or experience to participate. Fellows come from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. We are looking for individuals most likely to leverage the gifts of the program to make positive change in the world. Urban Adamah: The Jewish Sustainability Corps is now accepting applications for our summer and fall, 2011 fellowship programs. Completed applications will be reviewed starting January 17, 2011 for the summer season.
Description:

Sukkot, the Hebrew word for “hut” of “booth,” is sometimes referred to as the Jewish Thanksgiving. Beginning four days after Yom Kippur, it is the time when Jews give thanks for the fall harvest and commemorate the forty years of wandering in the desert. The holiday is celebrated with festive meals in a sukkah, which is a temporary hut that provides shade but also allows those in it to see the sky. The sukkah symbolizes the fragility of life. It also enables people to connect with Jewish history by replicating the type of structures in which those wandering the desert would have lived. The Asbell Center for Jewish Life will be celebrating Sukkot with the Beth Tikvah Congregation and Hillel students on Friday, September 24th, on the lawn between Weiss Center and the Asbell Center. Please come to enjoy the Sukkot Services and music by Eric Komar, Jewish musician from NJ. All are welcome!

Keeping kosher doesn’t have to mean just matzo-ball soup, and vegan options today go far beyond simple salads or soy-cheese pizza. That’s why the Dining Hall includes the KOVE (kosher + vegan).

Back To School: More Kosher Choices for College Students in 2010

New York by Tova Ross

Colleges and universities with traditionally large percentages of Jewish students, such as Columbia, NYU, CUNY colleges, and the University of Pennsylvania, have always offered kosher food to their students, but now smaller colleges with typically fewer Jewish students are trying to bolster their Jewish population by offering kosher food in their dining halls for the first time. Muhlenberg College in Allentown PA has seen an increasing number of Jewish students attend its school, despite the fact that it is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church and named for the patriarch of the Lutheran Church in America. To respond to the needs of kosher consumers, and to further push their growing reputation to the forefront of Jewish students, it recently opened The Noshery. Featuring two separate kitchens, Noshery North and Noshery South, meat or pareve/dairy meals are served to students and faculty at the college who keep kosher or have other dietary restrictions. The school plans to open the restaurant to the general public the following semester and to offer kosher catering. University spokesperson Mike Bruckner said, “Muhlenberg has an extremely active Jewish population, 37 percent of our student body is Jewish, and our college is very attractive to Jewish students from Maine to Virginia.” Rabbi David Wilensky, of Allentown’s Congregation Sons of Israel said that the restaurant will also be frequented by the community since there are no kosher restaurants in Allentown.

Also in Pennsylvania, Dickinson College’s new kosher vegan eatery, innovatively called The KOVE, serves dishes such as falafel chicken, spicy corn chili, and lentil and brown rice casserole, rather than the stereotypical matzah ball soup or potato kugel. All the food is certified by the Star-K. 10 percent of Dickinson’s student body is Jewish. Stephanie Balmer, Dickinson’s Dean of Admissions, stated: “Given Dickinson's strong Judaic-studies program, Hebrew language and study abroad offerings in Israel and extraordinarily active Hillel chapter, we thought a certified-kosher dining option would further enrich Jewish life at the college.” West Virginia University (WVU) Dining Center started offering kosher food to students for the first time this semester, at the request of Sharon Sinay, the first student at the university to ever request this particular type of food. Sinay told WVU publication The Daily Athenaeum that “kosher is part of the Jewish religion…this is a big part of the American culture. I think it should be in every dining room and in every dorm so everyone will be able to eat.” Bradley University, in Peoria, Illinois, has also begun offering kosher food to students this semester. Rabbi Eli Langsam of Chabad, was enlisted to be the kosher supervisor at the two new kosher kitchens, one for meat and one for dairy. The food will also be available to the 700 Jews who reside in the city of Peoria.

The Asbell Center, located in an historic building on High Street, sponsors Shabbat and holiday celebrations, cultural programs, lectures, discussion groups, and social justice projects. In addition to serving as the home base for Hillel, the Asbell Center also hosts the kosher cooking club and the Jewish men’s group, both of which started just last year.

Our building features a kosher kitchen, a beautiful sanctuary with stained glass windows, a third-floor lounge with TV room, and a living room/dining room where meetings, meals, seminars, and film screenings are held. We are introducing electronic card access this Fall, so that students will be able to use the building in the evenings and on weekends to do homework, plan activities, or just hang out!

In line with the college’s emphasis on “engaging the world,” we encourage students to travel to other places in order to experience different aspects of Jewish life. As a “Small and Mighty” Campus under Hillel International, we have slots for birthright trips to Israel—don’t miss the opportunity to spend ten days in the Jewish homeland! For the third time, the Asbell Center is organizing an amazing Alternative Spring Break social action trip to South America under the auspices of Hillel Argentina. And throughout the year, we will offer exciting Jewish-themed day trips to New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington D.C.

There will be a number of options for the High Holidays. The local Reform congregation, Beth Tikvah, sponsors lay-led services on campus for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. We will also obtain High Holy Day tickets to different Harrisburg-area synagogues and provide van transportation to those services. We will have two Rosh Hashanah dinners, one in the Asbell Center and one in the home of a local Carlisle family who host dozens of students each year. And we will have many other holiday celebrations as well, including a Break-the-Fast for Yom Kippur and a Sukkot observance at the college’s organic farm.

We hope to meet many students at some of the Orientation activities, including the cooking and art workshops on Friday, August 27th in the Asbell Center, the Shabbat service on Friday evening, August 27th in the Asbell Center, and the bagel brunch on Sunday, August 29th at 11:15 in the Depot! Please see the Jewish Life Fall 2010 information below for details:

The KOVE: Certifiably delicious (Kosher-Vegan Food)

With entrees such as falafel chicken, citrus London broil, soy burgers and lentil and brown rice casserole, Dickinson's new kosher-vegan food station offers mouth-watering mealtime alternatives that extend far beyond stereotypical kosher fare.

“When you walk down Giant’s kosher aisle, what do you see? A couple of jars of gefilte fish, matzo soup and egg noodles. But there’s so much more to the kosher diet,” observed kosher-food expert Louise Powers. “Anyone can eat kosher food, and we want to be sure it is tasty enough so anyone may want to. Food can be kosher and delicious.”

Powers and colleague Ricki Gold are kosher-food inspectors, or mashgiachs, from Star K, a nationally recognized kosher-certifying agency based in Baltimore. They direct the new kosher kitchen at Dickinson, ensuring that all kosher and vegan food served at the new food bar meets their rigorous standards.

Dubbed the KOVE—a clever blend of “kosher” and “vegan”—the food bar offers one vegan entree and one kosher dairy, meat or fish entree at lunch and dinner. Thursday nights feature international kosher and vegan cuisine, and students enjoy comfort-food offerings on Sundays. Kosher entrees will also be available at college events, such as the upcoming barbecue. “The food also meets halal requirements, because we follow such strict guidelines,” said Gold.

All of the food is prepared under Powers' and Gold's watchful eyes. The two inspectors begin with certified-kosher ingredients, including meat, chicken and other ingredients from a Baltimore-based company, as well as from Harrisburg’s Feesers Foodservice Distributor. When possible, they use produce from the Dickinson College Farm and other local outlets.

“We have to check all leafy vegetables—lettuce, spinach, broccoli—for insects, using a light box and magnifying glass. We also check eggs for blood spots. These are things that most people are not aware of, but we need to be very careful,” said Gold.

To ensure that all meat and dairy food is kept separate, the mashgiachs also supervise the chef in Dickinson's new kosher kitchen.

That kitchen appears to have been decorated by a harlequin jester: One half of the room, where meat is prepared, is painted red; the other, where dairy dishes are created, is blue. Each side features a complete set of major and minor appliances, dishes, utensils, cookware and bakeware—all color-coded, to avoid confusion when it's time to put the dishes and utensils away.

Powers notes that their hard work is more than worth it—and not just to those who keep kosher for religious reasons. “Many students who don’t keep kosher often enjoy the food, either because they perceive it to be more healthy, or because they just like the taste,” said Powers, explaining that the KOVE will feature college standbys, such as kosher hot dogs, hamburgers and pizza, as well as healthier options, such as salads and salmon brushed with a Jack Daniels sauce. “We’re hoping everyone will give it a try.”

Many students joined together on March 8th to celebrate the many cultures represented on Dickinson's campus as they commemorated the ways in which people around the world have struggled to be free. The annual dinner allows Dickinsonians to share a meal along with stories and insights about various cultures. It is modeled after the Jewish seder, a ceremonial dinner held during Passover, in which Jews eat traditional foods and recall their forefathers' exodus from Egypt. The Multicultural Seder was sponsored by Hillel, Milton B. Rabbi Shmuel Birnham '76 was appointed official rabbi of the 2010 Olympics.

Shmuel Birnham '76 was recently named official Jewish clergyman of the 2010 Winter Olympics. And as he counts down the days until the opening ceremony, he says he looks forward to offering spiritual support to the finest young athletes in the world.

“I’ve had some good conversations in the multifaith planning-committee meetings, and at the Olympic villages, with clergy from other faiths," he says, speaking by phone from Vancouver, host city of the 2010 Winter Games. "And any time religious persons from different faiths work well together—respectfully, collaboratively, creatively—you have something good going on. Significant things can, and do, happen.”

That’s a fitting stance for a man who is poised to work with athletes and clergy from all over the world. But, in fact, it's a philosophy he’s voiced often in his two-decade rabbinical career—a career that took root during his days as a Dickinson student.

A Gradual Awakening
A Long Island native, Birnham was raised in a family that did not attend synagogue, and identified himself as a Jewish atheist when he was a teen. But an epiphany during his first year at Dickinson inspired him to change his spiritual tune.

Birnham was hiking with four classmates in Yellowstone National Park when he had a powerful religious experience. Later, he experienced similar feelings of spiritual connection while competing on Dickinson’s NCAA men’s cross-country and men’s-track teams. “I wasn’t a top runner, but I had some truly transcendent moments while running,” he recalled. “I had a true sense of something beyond me.”

On leaving Dickinson and entering the workforce, sociology degree in tow, Birnham vowed to plumb that spiritual sense. Three years, and a brief business career later, he traveled to Israel, where he studied and lived in a kibbutz. After earning a master’s degree and ordination from New York’s Jewish Theological Seminary, he went to his first congregation, in Asheville, NC.

Today, Birnham serves a congregation in West Vancouver, a city well-known for its strong and vibrant Jewish population. And, he actively works to promote understanding between faiths. As a result, he was a speaker and participant at a retreat during the Dalai Lama’s 2004 visit to Canada. And, his public work attracted the attention of the Olympics’ multi-faith committee. A new opportunity transpired.

Hard-Won Empathy
As head of a team of Olympic rabbis, Birnham looks forward to helping young athletes deal with family crises that may arise, and with the unique stresses and pressures of high-stakes competition on the international stage. And he believes his experiences as a Dickinson student-athlete will inform this work.

While he stresses that his time competing at the NCAA level cannot compare to the Olympic experience, it certainly does help him inhabit the athletes’ mindsets. And, as a second-place-ribbon-earning athlete whose final running season was shut down prematurely due to illness, Birnham can also well understand the devastation of athletic opportunities lost.

“Not many of these athletes will get the gold medal. Most people are going to lose, even though they’re the top athletes in the world,” Birnham observes. “We're there to help them through it … it’s a rare honor and a rare responsibility."

"American Jewish History" - Hasia Diner is the Paul and Sylvia Steinberg Professor of American Jewish History at New York University, with joint appointment in the department of history and the Skirball Department of Hebrew and Judaic Studies. She is also director of the Goldstein Goren Center for American Jewish History. She has built her scholarly career around the study of American Jewish history, American immigration and ethnic history, and the history of American women. She has written about the ways in which American Jews in the early twentieth century reacted to the issue of race and the suffering of African Americans, and the process by which American Jews came to invest deep meaning in New York's Lower East Side. Her most recent book addresses post-World War II American Jews, in the period up to 1962, and their intense engagement with the Holocaust. She has also written about other immigrant groups and the contours of their migration and settlement, including a study of Irish immigrant women and of Irish, Italian, and east European Jewish foodways.
