Close to Home

Sometimes the perfect place for you is not so far away (or, in your back yard). But what is it really like to go to college close to home? Several Dickinsonians who hail from central Pennsylvania reflect on the choice.

Growing up a minute from campus, right in the heart of Carlisle, I never really saw myself at Dickinson—but I am happy that I am here. Going to school close to home has helped me in a lot of ways and I wouldn’t change it for the world. When I’m stressed or feeling isolated, it’s great to be able to pop in for a home-cooked meal. And there are wonderful people on campus that I have come to love and admire. To those who might be scared to go to your hometown’s college, I would say, go for it, because there’s no place like home.

I always knew that I wanted to go to a small school within two hours of home. I wanted to remain close to home so I could still be involved with my family and community. I am still far enough away that I am on my own and I am experiencing different cultures and communities that are on campus. While, Dickinson wasn’t originally on my radar, after receiving many mailers I decided to visit the college. After my first visit, I knew that Dickinson was the perfect place for me. Now, having completed my first year I knew that I made the best decision for myself. I found supportive teachers and an abundance of resources that I don’t believe that I would have found at another school.

Having grown up in Carlisle after my parents moved here from Europe, I was strongly against the idea of going to school so close to home. Dickinson was at the bottom of my list for that reason and I was more interested in colleges in areas like Washington, D.C., and Virginia.

However, at the strong recommendation of my parents, I decided to take a tour of Dickinson to see what the school had to offer. To my surprise, the school had everything I was looking for in those colleges that were farther away, and even more. The school had the beautiful campus that I was looking for, great academics that fit my desired career goal and strong study-abroad programs that fit my love of languages and international connections. The school also had the tight knit environment that I was looking for in order to get a strong education and the opportunity to be involved in various groups around campus. After visiting Dickinson’s campus, the benefits of going to college close to home became much more obvious.

After spending a year at Dickinson, I realized how amazing it is to be able to see my family in just a quick drive without worrying about planning for the additional cost of bus, train or airplane tickets. Going to college in a familiar area also makes me feel more comfortable navigating the campus. I chose Dickinson to be my home for these four years and I could not be happier with the choice I made and with the opportunities this school will give me in the future.
